Around the Grounds

Happy Friday, Woodleigh.
Next week is Activities Week for our Senior students, so we've kept things quiet on campus this week (noses to the school work grindstone). Our junior campuses have been up to all sorts, though.
To Know: Our Junior campuses have taken their learning to the city, the beach and the garden this week.
To Read: James Clapham, Minimbah's Lead teacher and a Compassionate Systems Master Practitioner, writes about helping our kids navigate complexity in a way we didn't have to at their young age.
To See: Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess," Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines. Woodleigh presents Chicago - Teen edition!
Building a fire
Fact: Volcanoes and lightning were nature’s first fire-makers.
Fact: Early humans learned to 'keep' fire from such sources and then discovered how to 'make' fire for themselves. Game-changer.
Early humans - and kids. They love fire, some more than others, and so, lessons in How-To (and how not to) are pretty important. Beginning with purposeful collecting, selecting and arranging twigs, sticks and logs. Layering them for a perfect, safe flame as part of the full cycle of the kitchen garden at Minimbah. Sparks of curiosity, flames of wonder. Zero injuries. All winners.

Year 6 Assembly

By James Clapham. In today’s world, children are absorbing more information than ever - about climate change, global conflict, artificial intelligence and social inequality. But knowledge on its own can be completely overwhelming. Without the tools to make meaning, many children are unprepared for the complexity of the world around them. So what can we do?

Penbank and Minimbah were part of the 2025 Boîte Schools Chorus, performing Mai Fali Eh!: Songs and Stories of Timor-Leste at Melbourne Town Hall, bringing together over 700 students from across Victoria.
With Timorese-Australian artists, the performance was a moving celebration of community, heritage, and the power of young voices. Photos to come....

Flowers from Carter
Carter is a gardener with a vision. He has been selling fresh flowers from his home garden, raising funds to purchase a new greenhouse for the Kitchen Garden at Minimbah. It's a space that Year 3 and 4 students have been regenerating through a design-focused lens. Their inspiration began earlier this year, when they first viewed their ideal greenhouse at the Flower Show. Since then, they’ve been eager to raise enough funds to bring their shared vision to life.

Discovery Day
Imagine this being your school yard. Minimbah kids are but a stone's throw from the beach. Based on Foundation to Year 2's “How the World Works” unit, children explored the tidal cycle, a natural process that illustrates our idea that everything in nature follows a cycle. From measuring tides to fossicking through the rock pools at the foreshore, the day was a blend of curriculum-connected exploration and student-led inquiry.
It’s days like these that remind us how lucky we are to experience learning in such a natural setting, right in our beautiful backyard.

Art
Endless goodness coming from the art room, pastel landscapes that will knock your socks off. Pinch pots that you'll want to, pinch and more.
