Sharing stories – what are the attributes that we value?

On the staff professional learning day at the beginning of the term, we spent some time listening to Dr. Arne Rubenstein speak about rites of passage, particularly concerning uncertainty times. One of the key ideas that he said was the critical role that stories can have in facilitating learning and building community. As we tell stories about our lives and experiences, we also begin to create shared stories, build an understanding of ourselves and others, and communicate our values and perspectives. We have been focusing on stories for the past couple of weeks, sharing our own and listening to others.

A great way to shape the stories we share can be through reflection on the IB learner profile. As a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, we seek to develop, appreciate, and celebrate the Learner Profile within the whole school community. The Learner Profile consists of the following ten attributes:

  • Open-minded
  • Risk-taker
  • Communicator
  • Balanced
  • Knowledgeable
  • Inquirer
  • Principled
  • Thinker
  • Reflective

When thinking about the stories you are sharing as a family, you may consider linking what you share with one or more of the attributes. Consider the following questions:

  • When is a time in your life that you have needed to work on one of the attributes?
  • What attributes do we show in our own lives? How do you show them?
  • Which of the attributes is a strength of yours? What is an example of this?
  • Who is someone else from your family that shows one of these attributes, give an example of when they have shown this?
