Hive Reflection

The first few weeks of the term has seen us continuing our investigations into How the World Works by investigating various materials and how they can be used or manipulated for multiple purposes.

The children have been discussing PVA's purpose and how it varies from other materials such as paint and cellophane.

A discussion about cellophane during the morning meeting provided us with an insight into the children's knowledge and thoughts.

Can you see through the material?

"No, it's too thick" Felix

During our busy working time, the children had an opportunity to engage and create a garland using various coloured cellophane pieces and pegs. These resources led the children into an inquiry about the effects of layering and light with transparent materials.

The children then began to explore light and shadow and how its effect is the same, but we aren't transparent unlike cellophane.


"Hey these are like the cellophane" Fletcher (Noticing that they are also transparent)

"Yeah they are, see here even the coloured ones I can see through" Henry

"You can see through them" Luca (connecting the concept of transparent from our morning meeting to a new situation)

"Hey, I can put all the clear ones together" Henry

The children sorted the water beads into colours using mathematical understanding and language to explore their size, colour and shape.

How we express ourselves through dramatic role-play

Our new inquiry will explore how we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs, and values. As we play, we will reflect on, extend, and enjoy our creativity and appreciation of the aesthetic. 


We have begun our new unit of inquiry on how we express ourselves. We are supporting the children to learn ways of expressing their ideas and emotions in social groups. Listening to other's opinions and respecting different ways of being and doing.

Dramatic role-play in a shop and then the hospital has provided the children with rich opportunities to develop social skills, communication, and collaboration.

We noticed the children accepting and assigning roles in their play and then acting them out.

They explored various problems and enjoyed reinventing scenes that might take place in their real lives, like shopping or to seeing a doctor when they are sick.

The educators helped the children set the stage and locate props that supported creative and imaginative play. To support this play, we will change the materials in the weeks ahead to enhance their play, spark new interests, and allow the children to incorporate new experiences into their play.

The children have been working on creating various obstacle courses exploring materials to express and communicate. The children said their feelings as they navigated the lesson and showed respect to others who varied their movements to listen to their bodies.

The children were observed seeking out and accepting new challenges, making discoveries, and celebrating their own and others' achievements. They worked cooperatively to move heavy logs and find different materials, such as the stepping stones. All children engaged in increasingly complex gross motor movement patterns.
