Around the Grounds

Wugubank kids
I feel incredibly proud and grateful for Penbank to have celebrated the beginning of Reconciliation Week with our dear friends and partners from Wugularr School. For 16 years, our Wugubank partnership has been growing stronger, bringing our communities closer together through connection, learning and real action towards reconciliation.
On Monday, the kids spent the day at Penbank with Year 6 and the night with their host families. On Tuesday, they all went tree surfing together. On Wednesday, they went to the city and on Thursday, they said goodbye - but only for now.
In August, the Penbank kids will head up to visit their friends in Beswick. From the bottom to the top of Australia, it's the things we share that make it special. Until then...

Da Vinci Decathlon
Sam, Isaac, Rufus, Connor, Thomas, Philippa, El and Ethan - congratulatons to all of you.
What is it and why Da Vinci? I'm so glad you asked.
It is 'an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students.' Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics, chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography, and legacy, mirroring the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon.
Why Da Vinci? Leo was the original IB guy; he didn’t just think outside the box, he probably invented it, then turned it into an aeroplane. Like a true IB learner, he was an inquirer and thinker. The Decathlon competition channels that same energy: solving problems, thinking deeply and if Da Vinci were alive today, he’d be on the Decathlon team, for sure.

Valanga
Storyteller and musician Valanga Khoza shares stories from his childhood in rural South Africa. Valanga has been a fixture at Woodleigh for so many years now; the kids know and love him. This week, he was at Minimbah and had everyone up, moving, and laughing. He involves them in these songs and stories, tailoring them to his young audience.

Senior Sport
So much sport. Soccer, Netball and Footy this week. Incredible results, we could brag - easily. But we won't. But we could. But we won't... ok maybe we will.
Girls Netball beat Flinders,
Girls Soccer beat St Peter's Cranbourne,
Senior Boys Footy team walloped Cornish,
Intermediate Boys Footy beat St Francis Xavier.

Reconciliation Week
After a Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Josh, at assembly, Ganga Giri's storytelling and masterful yidaki performance charmed everyone in the room.
As part of National Reconciliation Week, this gathering was a meaningful reminder of the importance of coming together, listening and learning. While this week highlights reconciliation, it’s something we are committed to every day.

Until we go around the grounds again next week...
