Knowing Our Why - Welcome to Woodleigh 2023
Welcome back! What a holiday we've had.
It has been great to welcome our community back to school, and in particular, to welcome new students and parents at the start of the year. It has been an incredibly positive start to the school year, and I am grateful to the efforts of our staff, our students, and our families for working tirelessly to bring together a great beginning.
As is always the case at the start of a new school year, I am often asked, 'how was your holiday?' In previous years, I might have given the obligatory 'OK' answer. However, this year has been different. I have quite unapologetically answered, "the best holiday ever."
Why was my holiday so great? Well, I had an amazing holiday, which began on our last working day of 2022, catching the evening ferry to have Christmas in Tasmania with family, surfing every day, and enjoying everything the great island state has to offer. After New Year's, I travelled to Japan with my daughters to enjoy two weeks of powder skiing in Hokkaido; a difficult place to get to, but well worth it.
While both of these on their own are trips of a lifetime - full of adventure and in some cases, risk - it was the journey with my daughters that was the highlight for me. For three weeks, we surfed, skied on beautiful snow, enjoying amazing Japanese cuisine; yet for me it was the time we spent together that was most valuable. To be honest, we could have been camping down at Wilson's Prom and my holidays would have still been amazing. Precious time with my adult daughters and my wife was regenerative for me personally, giving me the mental break I needed to come back to school refreshed and excited about the year ahead.
It wouldn't be a trip to a far-off place without running into several Woodleigh students and their families, enjoying the snow of Japan or the clean waves of Tasmania. True to our culture, they are always happy to see me and show interest in why I am where I am and what I am doing.
This is my fourth year at Woodleigh, yet the first start I have had where our planning and communications haven't been dominated by COVID rules and instructions. Instead, we have been able to meet as a leadership group and with staff to clarify our purpose and our direction for this year. What is it we hope to achieve and how will we lead the change that we aspire for?
We have some incredibly exciting projects beginning this year, and we can't wait to share with families what's in store for their young people. But before we talk about these projects, we need to come back to the why.
To understand this, I have been reflecting on my purpose in this world. I try my best to respect the environment and to act sustainably in the way I live my life. However, the impact of my individual actions will be nothing compared to the opportunity I have to lead this school, and the impact that will have on each of our students. Our impact in developing a better future will have much greater efficacy if we work together to achieve things collectively.
As teachers we have an amazing opportunity to work with parents to purposefully help our students to develop character, compassion, resilience, creativity, and skillfulness, to enable them to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world. At school, we are preparing our students for life beyond school. This must be at the heart of everything we do. This is our purpose.
For me, this comes back to our responsibility to prepare our students for their futures, creating in them the skills to become the leaders of the future who will help to guide our country and the world to a better place; a place where the environment is worshipped, and we do everything we can to act not only sustainably, but regeneratively. That is how we can add value to the environment and society in general.
We also have the desire to create a world that is equitable and respectful, and values each person for who they are. We want to encourage them to develop their own voice to have a say, not only in their own futures but all of our futures.
These are ambitious goals, which will require a lot of work and a great amount of commitment and dedication. After a great summer, it is now time to roll up our sleeves, get on with the work at hand and strive to do our best in everything we do. I will be doing that with the leadership team, our teachers, and all Woodleigh staff.
I wish every member of the Woodleigh community a wonderful and successful 2023, a year of great optimism and hope.

Year 6 students have kicked off library with a swag of kindness this year. In our first session, we spent time thinking about how the library is a shared space that belongs to everyone in the school, it’s a place where our community can gather, and with that comes the importance of being kind and respectful to one another.
Drawing inspiration from a poem featured in The New York Times, the Year 6 students spent their first session writing a collaborative poem about small acts of kindness and leaning into what kindness means to them.
As I write this, we are yet to have any other year levels begin their 2023 library journey, but I look forward to sharing many more exciting moments with you through the Messenger in 2023.

'Kindness' by Year 6 Minimbah Students
Kindness is like watering a plant. When you water a plant, it grows making everything around happier and healthier.
Kindness is Mr Davies saying 'hello'.
Kindness looks like sunset on the ocean after a warm day.
Kindness is when I get to school and have already been blessed with a hug from my best friend.
Kindness is when someone buys you the parts of the race car you lost.
Kindness looks like a baby yellow sunflower.
When it rains and my Mum makes us soup, this is what kindness feels like.
Kindness looks like the colours of a rainbow.
Kindness is when people make you feel like your opinion matters.
Kindness smells like my mum cooking my favourite meal.
Sometimes kindness goes undetected, but it still flutters in your heart.
Kindness is when you drop a pencil, and somebody else picks it up for you.
Kindness is when my Papa comes home and asks how our day went,
When my grandparents remember that assembly is tomorrow and surprise me with a visit, this feels like kindness
Kindness is my brother pausing the TV when I get a drink
It is when the lady next to you at the supermarket lets you go next
Kindness is when you are sad and the teacher asks you 'are you okay?'
Kindness is when the owner gives you a free cookie after you have ordered your food
Or when you drop money, and someone picks it up for you
When I feel worried, my Mum comforts me with kindness
Kindness is the feeling I get when I walk into the Homestead
Kindness is my brother getting me a drink when he goes to the kitchen
It is saying 'thank you' when someone purchases a tray of eggs. It can make my day.
It is showing your feelings to someone and helping them feel safe and included
To me, kindness feels like swimming in a field of daisies
Kindness is my parents always saying goodnight, even when they are tired
It is someone explaining something to you, so you don't mess it up
When people cheer me on in a race, this is kindness
Kindness is when someone tells you that your shoe is undone or passes you a pen you cannot reach
Kindness is letting your friend get the last goal
It is when my Dad adds the perfect amount of milk to my cereal
Or when you unevenly break a biscuit to share, and your friend takes the smaller piece
It is when one of your friends go on holiday with their family and you ask them how their trip was
Kindness is like a pandemic, but in a good way. It starts with one person, and it can become infectious and passed on from person to person.
Kindness is like a growing tree.
Production Announcement!
Year Six was abuzz with excitement as the 2023 school production was revealed on Friday afternoon. The big question of 'What show will it be??' was on everyone’s mind. So, without further ado (drum roll please ...) We are excited to announce Minimbah’s 2023 production is ...
Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical
We caught up with some students to hear their thoughts.
As we all know, the Minimbah Y6 Production 2023 is Matilda: The Musical. ‘Matilda’ is my ABSOLUTE favourite Roald Dahl book, and I was SO happy when it was announced. It is almost indescribable how thrilled I was when Chloe told us what it was …
Just before lunch, Mrs Wong came into the classroom to announce the production. After the buzz and hum of excitement that had washed over the class died down, Mrs Wong cleared her throat. She began by introducing.
"This year is a big year for all of you. One of the big things that you will be doing this year is production. I’m here to tell you what that is." Or something along those lines. Then after the drumroll as Mrs Wong took a breath and as she was about to say it, Chloe, who is Mrs Wong’s daughter, said:
"Matilda"
Chloe had known since the start of the holidays what production would be, and she just couldn’t keep it in!
We were in shock, we weren’t quite sure if it was true or not.
But Mrs Wong said,
‘Yes it is Matilda.’
And the crowd goes wild!!!!!!!

When we finally announced the production, I felt happy and relieved in that moment. It was hilarious when I announced it unexpectedly and everyone laughed. It was also nice not to have to keep it a secret anymore.
It was amazing to see everyone’s expressions and reactions. From their perspective, I could see there was a mixture of feelings; from curious, to excited, and finally happy. We are all looking forward to the production.

When I heard we were doing Matilda as our production I had a mixture of feelings. On one side I was jumping to the sky knowing we are doing Matilda, but on the other side I was nervous about being a Year 6 in a main role. Lights, Music ... Dance!!
Dance at Minimbah is off to a great start.
We played dance games, improvised movements to music and went on dance journeys together. When it was time to explore making shapes with our bodies, we created the unusual and sometimes funny shapes with our friends, which made us laugh! We joined body shapes together and found interesting ways to move as one, like a hybrid creature. It was hard to stay connected and travel together, but teamwork makes the dream work and that’s just what we did!

From the Art Room
Over the year, students will be exploring drawing, collage, painting, threads and textiles, construction, and modelling. We will focus on the elements which apply to all areas of art education including line, shape, colour, pattern and texture. ECC’s art piece will showcase self-portraits using paper strips and blackline drawings.
Foundation have begun making a collage and painted art piece called, ‘Isabella’s Garden’ inspired by the book of that name, written by Glenda Millard.
Year 1 and 2 are creating an art piece called, ‘It’s a small world’ using painted cardboard pieces and embellishments.
