The Resilience Project is Back!

Together we must raise caring, balanced, inquiring young people who can manage life's ups and downs. Developing resilience and recovering from setbacks and disappointments is more crucial than ever.

Why engage with the Resilience Project?  

  • 1 in 4 adolescents have a mental illness 
  • 1 in 7 primary schools kids have a mental illness 
  • 1 in 5 adults will experience mental ill-health throughout the year 
  • 65% of adolescents do not seek help for mental illness 

In 2008, Hugh van Cuylenburg, Co-Founder and Presenter, The Resilience Project, was fortunate enough to spend a few months living and volunteering in India's far north.  In this desert community, there was no running water, no electricity, and no beds; everyone slept on the floor of their hut. Despite the fact these people had very little to call their own, Hugh was continually blown away by how happy they were. 

This experience and subsequent post-graduate studies led him to some pretty simple conclusions about the things that we need to be doing here in Australia if we want to be happier. Hugh learned from this village that practising Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness leads us to a more joyful, more fulfilling experience.  Once he discovered these three principles were also evidence-based, Hugh decided to share these simple and highly effective wellbeing strategies in a program for schools. Ten years on, having worked with over 1,000 schools, it turns out it wasn't just schools that wanted to hear this message! The Resilience project grateful to work with teachers, students, parents, workplaces, community leaders, and sporting clubs every day. 

We are pleased to be welcoming back to Woodleigh, Mr. Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project. 

Martin's background is unique.  He spent a considerable amount of time growing up in Borneo, living with a Dayak headhunting tribe. He was educated in different parts of South East Asia and was heavily influenced by the morals and values that he and his family were immersed in while living with the Dayaks. 

After finishing high school in Melbourne, Martin spent six years in the AFL and SANFL systems playing for the St Kilda, Melbourne, and Norwood Football Clubs.  Following this, he travelled the world backpacking for nearly three years.  Upon return to Australia, Martin studied primary teaching at Melbourne University.  After completing his degree, he taught Years 1 and 2 and 5 and 6 for four years before being promoted to Assistant Principal at Auburn Primary, where he focused on Student Wellbeing, Educational Leadership, and Change Management. 

After four years as Assistant Principal, he joined The Resilience Project. Since 2016, he has conducted over 1,700 presentations across Australia to key stakeholders at schools and their communities, corporations, and elite sporting organisations, including the AFL, NRL, and the A-League.  He is currently working with the Hawthorn Football Club. 

He especially enjoys situations that present challenges and require an optimistic focus to address.  He is passionate about children being raised in a supportive and encouraging environment that evokes self-confidence and a zest for life.  His presentations are original and energetic.

Happy Birthday Kerrie 

Last week we celebrated a milestone birthday for our wonderful Kerrie.  The staff and children joined together at morning tea to pay tribute to and celebrate Kerrie's birthday.  Thank you, Kerrie, for all you do for the children, parents, and staff.  You are a much loved and admired member of our community and my loyal Personal Assistant and dear friend.

Term 1 will conclude at 3.20 pm on Thursday 1 April.  As we head into the final two weeks of the term, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support as we have navigated our time together: a mini lockdown, now a distant memory, and a bump in an otherwise smooth road.  I wish you and your families best wishes for the forthcoming break and hope you will find time to reconnect and savour quality time together.  Term 2 will commence on Tuesday, 20 April
