Careers Conference

During the first week of March, Year 10 students participated in the first Careers Conference on campus. The purpose of the week was to support students in building their work readiness skills with a strong focus on job applications, interview skills, and creating a social enterprise by using design thinking strategies.

It was a pleasure to see the students engage with the week, demonstrating creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. These essential  21st-century skills (aligning with our IB Learner profile) will set them apart from others in their future endeavours. Thank you to the 15 Industry and Community volunteers who volunteered their time to conduct the interviews. Our students are well equipped with the skills and knowledge to prepare job applications and present themselves confidently in an interview. We wish Lilli-Anne V and True S all the best for the final round interviews, which will take place with Mr Baker this week.

Woodleigh School partnered with Young Change agents to develop our student's capacity to create Social Enterprises. The students completed a 2.5 day Hackathon, where they were taught design thinking strategies to see problems as opportunities. Students worked in 5-7 to unpack issues and ideate, validate, prototype and pitch. 

Students undertook empathy interviews to develop an understanding of the issues facing their communities. Teams explored a range of focus areas, including:

  • Awareness surrounding gender diverse and LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Female empowerment
  • Women's confidence in sports
  • Visibility of transgender people
  • Litter around the school
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Homelessness
  • Stress in high school students
  • Lack of accessible public transport options 
  • Security at the beach
  • Live venues for under 18s
  • Toxic masculinity
  • Netiquette in online gaming spaces
  • Crime and safety in Frankston
  • Students not eating breakfast
  • Litter at the beach
  • Sustainability in schools
  • Unaffordable canteen

Some of the creative ideas that students developed included:

  • Minority Muse(panellist's choice): A youth-led group educates adults and young people on gender identity and the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • The Sticky Scheme(YCA choice): A Post-It note wall in a lady's shape that women would write empowering messages to help women at work.
  • Youth Girls Fitness Program: A girls fitness program to encourage young women to be more confident in sports.
  • Finding the 4 Leaf Clover: A book about a young child's journey to finding themselves and coming out as trans, with the help of their nan.
  • T-Game (people's choice): Creative and fun bins that make disposing of rubbish fun and engaging.
  • The Tokaa Workshops: Workshops that educate students on how to protect the environment by using sustainable alternatives.
  • Food for Friendship: Cooking classes for people experiencing homelessness, funded through selling baked goods.
  • An eye mask with inbuilt earphones helps students manage stress through curated sleep programs, including meditation and music playlists.
  • Express Bus - a dedicated bus that supports teenagers to travel between regions in the peninsula on weekends autonomously. The service provides training and employment to newly arrived migrants looking for work.
  • Hireable lockers at the beach where users can safely and securely store their belongings. The proceeds will be donated to SLSC
  • The Pit: A live music venue and event designed to bring a fun and safe nightlife experience for under 18s.
  • GNBC: A men's skincare brand that breaks stereotypes of masculinity and encourages conversations around harmful gender stereotypes.
  • Troll lock (winner #1): An innovative software company that leveraged AI to support businesses to block hate speech in the online environment and donates their profit to mental health charities.
  • A concert showcasing local musicians that can provide entertainment for local SES members of the community.
  • Full Breaky: A breakfast program that offers a cheap meal for students to enjoy at school and donates meals to those going without in the community.
  • A la Plage (winner #2): A rewards scheme that provides users with cheap coffee in exchange for picking up rubbish at the beach.
  • Re-Recycle: A business that sells sustainable alternatives to commonly used disposable items around the school (e.g., paper towels).
  • Clean Canteen: A new canteen that repurposes food from local businesses that would otherwise go to waste into affordable meals for students.

Throughout the program, teams worked their way through several activities, developing skills in multiple core competencies, identifying a problem, creating a social enterprise solution, developing the idea that solves an issue they care about and pitching for feedback.

The students developed a range of skills, including:
