Instrumental Music Tutor (Voice)

Woodleigh School is seeking a sessional instrumental voice tutor to join our Junior Campus Penbank (Moorooduc).

Position Summary

The role of the appointed Instrumental Music Tutor will be to join a dynamic team, teaching voice as part of the Instrumental Music Program at our Penbank Junior Campus, with the potential of increasing student numbers across our Minimbah Junior Campus. An involvement in the Co-Curricular Music Program as a supporting staff member for the wider Woodleigh Music Program is also a key component of the position.

  • Designing and implementing instrumental teaching programs developing technical skill, repertoire and engagement in music.
  • Developing teaching activities that incorporate differentiated strategies to meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities.
  • Planning and implementing well- structured learning and teaching programs or lesson sequences that engage students and promote learning.
  • Selecting and using relevant teaching strategies to develop knowledge, skills, problem solving and critical and creative thinking.
  • Establishing and maintaining orderly and workable routines.
  • Providing timely, effective and appropriate feedback to students about their achievement relative to their learning goals.
  • Creating a positive environment where every student has the opportunity to learn
  • Contributing to collegial discussions and applying constructive feedback from colleagues to improve professional knowledge and practice.
  • Undertaking teaching across Primary and Secondary year levels
  • Undertaking other duties as required and which are relevant to the position, as directed by the Head of Faculty, Director of Music or Head of Campus
  • Catering to the individual needs of each student, for example, designing an engaging and creative program for students who want to play for leisure or preparing students for AMEB etc.
  • Preparing students for performances
  • Encouraging and supporting students to be involved in the co-curricular music ensembles
  • Fulfilling administrative requirements of the school, including organising student timetables, keeping lesson attendance records and preparing individualised reports within a given timeline
  • Ensuring lessons occur on a repeating and regular, weekly basis throughout each term, taking into account (and flexibly working with) the pre-requirements of the school-based curriculum
  • Communicating regularly with parents, particularly if there are any areas of concern, such as attendance issues, lack of practise etc.
  • Attending staff professional learning days, meetings and performances, as required.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience or skills in the following areas:

  • An understanding of appropriate behaviours when engaging with children.
  • Relevant instrumental teaching experience or experience working with children.
  • Relevant industry experience
  • Professional practice that is strongly aligned with the expectations of The Woodleigh Staff Member
  • Have a dynamic and approachable manner, with the ability to relate well to students of all ages
  • Have outstanding skills as a musician and a broad understanding of a range of styles/genres
  • Demonstrate the ability to work co-operatively as part of a team, with a focus on continuous improvement of our music department and teaching and learning within it.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualification in Music, and/or Education is preferred.


  • Experience in designing, implementing and assessing effective curriculum
  • Accompanying Skills and Experience
