Term 1
All students from years 7-12 participate in a week of camping activities.
Years 7-10
Years 7-10 take part in a four-year cycle of sequential learning experiences which form the basis of our Outdoor Education program.
For Years 7 and 8, the experience entails camping under canvas in a coastal or mountain environment.Students are organised in Homestead groups and they share the week’s activities with their tutor teachers.
Year 9 students undertake an Outward Bound adventure camp in the mountain-type environment of Gippsland or the Grampians.
Year 10 students experience small group hikes and initiative activities in the semi-desert environment of the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park south of Mildura.
Years 11-12
Year 11 and 12 students ballot for a position in a range of activities which may include the following:
- Horse Riding An exploration of the High Country. Blair’s Hut, the Diamantina Spur, Snowy Creek, Mt. Feathertop
- Touring In the semi-desert areas of North West Victoria and Western New South Wales – Lake Mungo, the “Walls of China”, Broken Hill
- Diving SCUBA adventure at King Island
- Sea Kayaking Snake Island, Wilson’s Promontory, Corner Inlet or Mallacoota exploring the coast in sea kayaks
- Surf Lifesaving Phillip Island. Students will work towards gaining their Community Surf Bronze Certificate
- Abseiling, Rafting, Walking and Caving With Outward Bound and Woodleigh staff along the Snowy River
- Trekking at Cradle Mountain, Tasmania
- Arts - A visit to the Sydney or Adelaide Arts Festival. A feast of theatre, dance, music, film.
Students in Years 11 and 12 who do not wish to continue with Outdoor Education experiences are able to choose activities which may match their interests more closely. Students wanting more Outdoor Education are able to take the subject as a VCE elective. Woodleigh has many students who are keen to pursue careers in this area.
Term 3
Year 12 students do trial VCE examinations and do not take part in the Term 3 Activities Week. Year 7-11 students ballot for a place in a range of activities which include, for example:
- Adventure Outdoors Cross country skiing
- Bushwalking at Lake Mountain and Marysville
- Bermagui Skin Diving For students who have learnt to skin dive
- Intensive Flight Training
- Broken Hill and Beyond -The art and environment of Broken Hill
- Cape Conran Adventure Fishing
- Hiking, canoeing and day trips to Errinundra Plateau.Croajingalong National Park, Buchan Caves
- City Camp Year 11s visit Universities, Art and Cultural Centres and Community Service Organisations
- Croajingalong Adventure Walk along the most remote beaches on the eastern coast from Tamboon Inlet to Mallacoota
- Cross Country Skiing Alpine skiing in the Bogong High Plains and Mt Cope
- Goldfields Bike Tour Corowa via Beechworth to the Kiewa Valley
- Horse Riding In the glorious Victorian High Country, from Bright to the Buckland Valley
- Mt Arapiles Rock Climbing Near Horsham – one of the world’s top rock climbing venues
- Mt Buller Down Hill Skiing For students with some experience, lessons included.
Yookamurra Sanctuary Hands on management experience at a conservation camp in South Australia
- School-based Activities Circus skills; drama; make your own clothes; artistic projects; fun, food and fitness; multimedia; horse riding at Red Hill; aboriginal art and culture; photography; jewellery making
The full range of activities offered in Activities Week is distributed to families well in advance of the dates. It should be noted that these activities are grouped into two categories – camps and school-based. Costs involved are clearly indicated with each course description.
